Barbara L. Andersen, Ph.D., is a clinical psychologist and Professor at the Ohio State University in the Department of Psychology, with a joint appointment in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. For the OSU Comprehensive Cancer Center she is the Director of the Lance Armstrong Survivorship Center of Excellence and a member of immunology and cancer prevention and control programs. She has authored three books and over 150 research articles on clinical psychology and behavioral medicine topics. She currently holds a NIH/NCI (KO5) Research Career Award from the National Cancer Institute. Her research portfolio includes three decades of research on the biobehavioral aspects of cancer and cancer survivorship. Dr. Andersen has extensive expertise in clinical trials for female cancer patients and is nationally and internationally known for her contributions to psychoneuroimmunology research in cancer. For a recent randomized clinical trial (the Stress and Immunity Breast Cancer Project), Dr. Andersen formulated and tested a psychological intervention to reduce stress and enhance quality of life for breast cancer patients. The intervention successfully reduced distress and physical symptoms, improved health behaviors and adherence to cancer treatment, and improved immunity. Recent data also show reduced risk of recurrence and breast cancer death for women receiving the intervention. Dr. Andersen’s current studies are dedicated to meeting the unmet needs of underserved cancer survivor groups, including helping gynecologic cancer patients with their sexual concerns, patients with co morbid psychopathology (such as major depressive disorder), and patients coping with recurrence.
