Psychiatrist, Director of Eating Disorder services at Mayo Clinic

Dr. McAlpine obtained his MD from the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis in 1979 and did his Psychiatry Residency at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine in Rochester, MN and then went on staff there in the Department of Psychiatry and Psychology in 1983.  He is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry on the Faculty of the Mayo Medical School and Mayo Graduate School of Education.  He has over 20 years of clinical experience with eating disorders and has been the director of the Eating Disorder Services since 1988.  Scholarly writing includes contributions to the International Journal of Eating Disorders on treatment practices for Bulimia Nervosa, the American Journal of Gastroenterology on Anorexia Nervosa, the Bockus: Gastroenterology textbook, Mayo Clinic Women's Healthsource on Eating Disorders at Mid Life among others.  He has reviewed articles on eating disorders for the American Journal of Psychiatry.  Current research interests include athletics and eating disorders, non-exercise thermogenesis and anorexia nervosa and bariatric surgery. Other areas of research interests include psychogenomics and drug metabolism, transcranial magnetic stimulation for depression and pain, somatoform disorders.  The American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology has certified Dr. McAlpine in Psychiatry and he has Added Qualifications in Addictions Psychiatry and in Geriatric Psychiatry.
