Donald G. McNeil Jr., a science reporter at The New York Times, started at the paper as a copy boy in 1976.  He has been a city reporter, an environment reporter, an editor on several sections, a theater columnist, and a foreign correspondent in Africa and Eastern Europe.  Since joining the science staff, he has written mostly about diseases, especially pestilences affecting poor countries and the hunt for affordable cures.
