Leonore Tiefer’s career has focused on sexuality. She began with an Experimental Psychology PhD on hormones and mating behavior in animals. In the 1980s she moved into human sexology and respecialized in clinical psychology. She currently has a private psychotherapy and sex therapy practice in Manhattan and holds positions at both NYU School of Medicine and Albert Einstein College of Medicine. In addition to scores of empirical publications Dr. Tiefer has written extensively about the politics of sexuality. Her first book, Sex is Not a Natural Act and other essays, is in a 2nd edition and she has co-edited A New View of Women's Sexual Problems. Dr. Tiefer is one of the foremost critics of "disease-mongering" trends in the medical management of women's sexual problems based on her educational campaign to challenge the medicalization of sexuality,

Dr. Tiefer has received professional awards and been elected to many offices within sexological and feminist organizations. She is well-known as a public speaker, having been invited to keynote dozens of conferences in places such as London, Lausanne, Osaka, Istanbul and Calcutta. She has offered grand rounds in Psychiatry, Urology, and OB-Gyn at many medical centers and spoken to innumerable university and college clubs, classes, and public audiences. In 2003, she was a platform speaker at the Chautauqua Institution, speaking to an audience of over 4500, standing in the same honored spot as Susan B. Anthony and Eleanor Roosevelt.
