Lisa P. Gwyther is a social worker with 39 years of experience in aging and Alzheimer’s services.  She directs the the Durham, NC Duke Center for Aging’s Alzheimer’s Family Support Program, an award-winning state-funded first responder, clearinghouse, training and technical assistance center for families and professionals caring for people with Alzheimer’s disease.  Ms. Gwyther is a distinguished social work practitioner of the National Academies of Practice.  She directed education for the National Institute on Aging Bryan Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center at Duke Medicine from 1985 until 2011.

Ms. Gwyther is an associate professor in the Duke Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, and a past president of the Gerontological Society of America.

Ms. Gwyther has published over 123 articles, book chapters and books on Alzheimer’s care and family caregiving research.  Ms. Gwyther was honored in 1998 as one of 30 founders of the national Alzheimer’s Association.  She is the co-author of The Alzheimer’s Action PlanA Family Guide (2009).

Ms. Gwyther received two major North Carolina awards for leadership in aging services, and she was the first national recipient of the John Heinz Congressional Fellowship in Aging and Health. 

Ms. Gwyther won two documentary film awards – The Freddie Award, International Health and Medical Film Competition for “Depression in Older Adults: The Right to Feel Better” and the 20th Anniversary Classic Telly Award as Executive Producer of “From Here to Hope,” an Alzheimer’s documentary.
