Director of Exhibitions
Rochester Memorial Art Gallery
Rochester, New York

Marie Via is Director of Exhibitions at Memorial Art Gallery in Rochester, NY.  After graduating from Illinois State University, she was tapped to run a new gallery there, devoted to the work of regional artists.  She was offered a position in the Curatorial Department at MAG shortly after she and her husband Jim, an artist, moved to Rochester in 1982.  During her years there, she has curated over 40 exhibitions, including Looking Back:  A Perspective on the 1913 Inaugural Exhibition (for the Gallery's 75th anniversary); Head, Heart and Hand:  Elbert Hubbard and the Roycrofters (which toured nationally); New Realism for a New Millennium, Extreme Materials and Extreme Materials 2, Albert Paley in the 21st Century; and the ongoing Rochester Biennial series.  Currently, she is developing an exhibition on the theme of "memory" for the museum's centennial celebration in 2013.  She is frequently invited to be a juror for area exhibitions, and is committed to making art, especially contemporary art, less intimidating to people than it often seems.

In April 2011, Via contracted pneumonia for the second time and was hospitalized for five days.
