Maryellen Nerz-Stormes was born in 1958 and earned a BS degree in biochemistry from The College of Mt. St. Vincent (1980) and a Ph.D. degree in organic chemistry from the University of Pennsylvania (1985).    She eventually joined the faculty of Bryn Mawr College, where she has taught organic chemistry since 1988. At Bryn Mawr, she was the recipient of the Roselyn Schwartz Teaching Award in 2000 and the Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching in 2007. In 2001, Maryellen Nerz-Stormes was diagnosed with stage IV, metastatic breast cancer. She has now survived nine years with constant chemotherapeutic and biologic treatment.  She has tried to be a full collaborator in her own medical case. 

Maryellen Nerz-Stormes is dedicated to teaching science and devoted to sharing her knowledge and experiences as a cancer patient. In addition to giving occasional lectures  on her experiences, she serves on the IRB of  her local hospital. She is currently writing an on-line organic chemistry text book and creating a data base for people with metastatic brain tumor and primary brain tumor, samples of these can be found on her website:

Maryellen Nerz-Stormes is also currently working on a small, student oriented organic synthesis project of cancer drugs that will hopefully have efficacy in treating metastatic brain tumor and primary brain tumor. She is married and the mother of two teenage sons.  She lives in Strafford, Pennsylvania.
