With the Center for Vision Science at the University of Rochester and Bausch & Lomb, Inc., Dr. MacRae promotes research and development of new refractive surgery techniques and technology. He has a special interest in laser ablation design and customized vision correction and in clinical trials, and has participated in and helped lead several FDA clinical trials in the United States.  Dr. MacRae has done more than 9,000 refractive surgery procedures and has trained over 300 clinicians around the world in the practice of refractive surgery.  His background as a corneal physiologist has allowed him to work extensively on the long term and public health effects of LASIK and refractive surgery.  Senior Associate Editor of The Journal of Refractive Surgery and author of over 80 published articles and book chapters, he has also written two best selling ophthalmic books on LASIK and refractive surgery: Customized Corneal Ablation: The Quest For Supervision and Wavefront Guided Vision Correction: The Quest for Supervision II.  In 1993 he was awarded the Lans Award, the second highest award in refractive surgery by the American Academy of Ophthalmology and The International Society of Refractive Surgeons. He has been voted by his peers as one of the "Best Doctors in America" for the past 13 years.  He was also named one of the 50 top world opinion leaders in a survey by Cataract and Refractive Surgery Today this year.   He was Chairman of the American Academy of Ophthalmology Public Health Committee from 1991 to 1994 and a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology Research and Regulatory Committee from 1997 to 2000.
